Virgo Season

Virgo Season is here! Happy birthday to all my fellow Earth friends. We’ve spent the month of August shining brightly, celebrating life & being creative, now it is time for refinement and humility. The biggest contrast between Leo Season and Virgo Season is the feelings of pride moving into being more humble. The Sun has moved into Virgo on August 23rd, which falls on a Monday and as the astro internet jokes, of course Virgo Season started on a Monday, the first business day of the week, being all professional and work focused as the “stereotypical” Virgo is. During the next 4 weeks we are supported to reflect and analyze ourselves, our lives and society, to make decisions on what has worked best for our evolution and embrace those parts. As well as reviewing and removing what has become of no use and unnecessary, not serving us anymore, whether it is in the physical world around us or within ourselves. Virgo’s organizational skills, attention to detail and perfectionism bring order, beauty and natural flow into this world.

Mercury

The planet Mercury was already mentioned in the Gemini Season post because Mercury rules both Gemini (Air Sign) and Virgo (Earth Sign), but this is a great opportunity to expand on its symbolism and significance. Unlike the Sun & Moon, Mars & Venus that represent either masculine or feminine archetypes, Mercury is a neutral & genderless energy and it represents merging both masculine and feminine energies together, and canceling them out at the same time, creating a whole new archetype of interconnectedness. The glyph of Mercury contains the Moon on top of the Sun, which represents both the unconscious and the conscious meeting together. Mercury rules the mind and communication, the connection between the conscious, subconscious and unconscious. In Greek Mythology, god Hermes expresses the energy of Mercury by being the only god who can travel and pass messages between the heavens, the human world and the underworld. In Egyptian Mythology, deity Thoth has a significant mercurial role as well, being the god of wisdom, learning, writing, and even his name resembles the word thought. Mercury represents everything that connects one to another. In the physical world any kind of transport, ground vehicle, net & webbing is ruled by Mercury, and in our bodies the nervous system fits the same role of connecting our nerves with each other and allows our body to send and receive information. With this in mind, mycelium is another incredible example of interconnectedness within the nature.

Mercury feels at home when it is in Gemini and Virgo, and it is exalted in Virgo. Because of Virgo’s groundedness, practicality and logic, Mercury is able to think clearly and communicate straight to the point.

Virgo - I analyze, I serve

Virgo is the second Earth sign of the Zodiac and it is Mutable quality. Summer in the Northern Hemisphere is now ending, weather is slowly starting to change and we are getting ready to adapt to the cooler autumn days. This reflects Virgo’s adaptability and capability to change, as well as the time for harvest and enjoying all the Mother Earth’s gifts.

Gift of Virgo is being able to bring refinement and integrate into the best version of itself. Traditionally being connected to the “Virgin”, Virgo was not meant to literally mean a person who has never been sexually active, but to represent being in flow with nature and self-containment. Virgo is naturally reserved and spends lots of time in their mind, thinking of ways how they can become better or do better. Because of this, they can easily become self-critical which then reflects by being critical of others as well, even though the intention was meant only for making things better. In a similar approach, Virgo rules health & self care, always wanting to be healthy and to feel better. This makes them prone to obsess over health and think there are things wrong with them even when everything is fine. Being aware of this tendency is already a step toward self awareness and actually knowing when something is wrong and when nothing is wrong. Another purpose and theme of Virgo is being of service. After establishing and strengthening our center and our core during Leo Season, we now have strength and wisdom to move the ego aside and to tap into our purpose of being of assistance to others during Virgo Season. Virgo’s logical and practical approach helps the society to make order and to function in a harmonious way.

Chiron

This is an honorable mention to Chiron, an asteroid that has been linked to Virgo; some modern astrologers say that Chiron rules Virgo. Chiron represents our deepest wounds, and in a paradoxical way our biggest strength in helping others heal those exact wounds, which then brings healing to Chiron.

The Sixth House

The sixth house in a chart is the house that corresponds to Virgo. In this house we can discover ways and approaches of an individual to their daily life, routine and responsibilities, as well as their physical health and wellbeing. The sixth house reveals a person’s way of being in service to society and the world. It is the house of diet, nutrition & alternative medicine. It is also the house of pets! I guess in a way our pets serve us as much as we serve them…

Astro-Herbalism

In his Astro-Herbalism course, Sajah Popham describes Virgo by stating “Virgo purifies the essences of the previous 5 Signs, integrates them into a state of wholeness, so that they can then be carried forward into a completely different phase of development in the final 6 Signs

Herbs associated with Virgo are the purifiers, cleansers and beneficial for the liver.

Herbs that are beneficial for Virgo signs & body constitutions are the ones which are both relaxant nervine (for calming the nervous system) and digestive remedies, and that includes Chamomile & Lemon Balm.
